Mumbai: A shocking case of financial fraud, involving Rs30 lakh, has come to light by way of manipulation of Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) and Recurring Deposit (RD) accounts at a local Post Office. Preliminary findings indicate the involvement postal agent Kamini Padenekar and quite a few staffs of the department, who allegedly misused their positions to siphon off customers’ hard-earned savings. An amount of Rs7 lakh was allegedly withdrawn from the bank account of an NRI, Lachhmi Bhatt and more than Rs30 lakh from various investors. Several innocent depositors have been affected, with significant amounts missing from their accounts. The victims, who had placed their trust in the postal system for the safety and security of their investments, are now facing immense financial and emotional distress.

Despite filing complaints and submitting relevant documents, the affected investors have yet to receive proper redressal or recovery of their funds. The delay in investigation and resolution has added to their hardship. The victims are now making an urgent appeal to higher authorities of India Post, the Postal Department, and the Ministry of Communications to intervene swiftly.

Talking to Bizz Buzz, Lachhmi Bhatt says, “I and other victims want immediate suspension and investigation of the involved officials concerned and the agent.”

Another victim, on condition of anonymity said, “ We also want recovery and reimbursement of the defrauded amounts to affected depositors.”

Moreover, the victims have demanded strengthened monitoring and verification systems to prevent recurrence of such frauds in the future.

“This incident has shaken public confidence in postal savings schemes, which have long been considered one of the safest small savings options for the common man, senior citizens, and rural investors”, a person familiar with the development said.

The victims have urged the authorities to take strict action to restore faith in the system and ensure that the culprits are held accountable.
